Printing
We are working with print at the moment and made collograph prints out of cardboard. We cut out cardboard and created raised images which we then painted and used to make our prints. Have a look!
Drama performance
We are putting on a little performance in the next few weeks. Date to be confirmed, watch this space!! |
Persuasive writing - emails
We recently co-wrote an email to Creative Ireland, asking them to consider subsiding the cost of self-publishing in schools. Have a read of what we wrote...
Creative Ireland have since responded, thanking us for our email and giving us a contact number for a SDCC Creative Ireland co-ordinator! We'll let you know if we get anywhere with it!

Creative Ireland have since responded, thanking us for our email and giving us a contact number for a SDCC Creative Ireland co-ordinator! We'll let you know if we get anywhere with it!
To whom it may concern,
We are 5th class students in Ballyroan Boys School, Rathfarnham and we have
recently published a book of poetry and stories through the Emu Ink School
Publishing Programme.
We are writing to you because it has come to our
attention that the printing price per book is very high. It is great to have the
opportunity to see our stories and poems in print and we have had a great
time creating and publishing our anthology. However, the prohibitive price of €10
per book was a lot to ask parents to pay, especially if they wanted to buy more than one copy.
We live in a country that has a wealth of talented young authors, poets, songwriters
and playwrights. The Emu Ink Schools Publishing Programme is a fantastic way
to encourage more young people to be creative and imaginative. It gives them a chance
to see their work in print. Therefore, we think it would be great if you could find
a way to subsidise or help schools to meet the high costs of the printing programme. We think
that a lot more schools would avail of this programme and publish their collections of stories
or poems too.
We hope you agree that by giving a little financial assistance to schools like us who are
embarking on self-publishing, you are investing in the arts and culture of the future.
Kind regards

Active week
Welcome to Active Week!! Every day this week we are doing 'Active 10 and 10 past 10'. We get out and copy some moves from teachers on the roof (have a look at the photos). We are also doing a daily mile which is 11 laps of our yard. The boys are recording their time in their diaries and trying to match or beat their personal best each day! We are also doing yoga on Wednesday and a soccer blitz on Friday! It's all go! With this nice weather there's no excuse for you not to get moving at home too!
Save our Sea art!
We are passionate about saving the earth in 5th class and our recent art shows this. Look at how clean the water is for our turtles and jellyfish! Let your gaze follow up to the surface and into the light...

Bottle Cap Art
Our bottle caps have been used to create our fabulous art piece for our classroom and haven't ended up in the sea. Well done to all the boys who contributed to the creation and brought in bottle caps.

Poetry Day Ireland and 5th Class
This year, Poetry Day Ireland was on the 2nd May and all the boys got 'stuck in' and spent just 10 minutes writing a poem about any subject they wanted. Poetry is a wonderful way for the boys to express themselves and their ideas better.
Here is a small selection of the wonderful poetry composed in 5th class.
The Mystery Ship
The mystery ship,
Named Mary Celeste,
Was a weird boat,
Quite unlike the rest.
You see, it went missing,
Far out at sea,
Nobody knows how,
It’s a mystery.
Perhaps it sank,
At the hands of the Kraken,
Maybe a mutiny,
Against the captain.
Still nobody knows,
What happened to it,
So let’s just call it,
The mystery ship.

People say “It’s impossible”.
Nothing is.
Let your imagination run free
Anywhere you think you can be
Thoughts all jumbled about
And through your pencil you let them out
In your mind only ideas exist
Some dismissed with a flick of the wrist
In there, there’s nothing you can’t do
Really, the only limit is you.

The Secret Garden
You want to go to the garden I see
You’ll have to wait and follow me
Up the bridge, round the bend
And you’ll see your journeys end.
Follow the hill and round the trees
Looking out for the small buzzing bees
Your journey ends, but do not fear
Yes, I see that little small tear
This garden is for yours to keep
So, jump around and have a leap
Now go run free on this misty night
Let the garden take full flight.

I’m a Potato
I’m a potato
In the middle of the night
Suddenly,
I caught the blight
And now
I’m heading towards the light.

The Octopus
The octopus swims
Under the sea
Into the depths of the beautiful blue.
Seaweed and coral grow on the rocks,
And the octopus swims,
Through the ripples of water.
Fish and sharks,
Whales and rays,
Are all animals
that the octopus sees.
He takes a rest
Against a rock,
Camouflaged on the grey surface.
When he wakes,
The ocean is dark
Night has come.
Again the octopus swims through the blue
The sea is now quiet
While most animas are asleep.
He keeps on swimming,
Through the dark,
Enjoying this peaceful night.
Sometimes his other friends appear,
He only meets them at dark,
Down further in the blue.
Giant squids,
Fish with lights,
The octopus sees all of these sights.
The morning is soon,
The octopus swims,
Another day done,
In the deep blue.

IRELAND
I Icy weather, almost never warm
R Right beside England with Big Ben
E Equally as cold as Iceland
L Love being cooled down by the cold air
A And summer is on the way
N Now you know what Ireland is like, it may be cold but
it is home
D Dublin is mine and Ireland is good enough for me
